At this time, I’m only recommending new vehicles, which are my area of expertise.

What’s the difference between a Hybrid and a Plug-in-hybrid?
Hybrids (HEVs) operate in a similar manner to gas vehicles. You fill them up with gas and when they’re empty, you’ll refill them. In addition to an engine, they have a small battery pack and electric motor that turns on at lower speeds in order to increase efficiency. Sometimes, the engine will turn off altogether, saving fuel. The battery is charged by a combination of the engine and the energy generated by braking.
A plug-in-hybrid (PHEV) uses a much larger battery pack and a more powerful electric motor. PHEVs have small all-electric driving ranges (typically 15-50 miles). PHEVs batteries are charged by you plugging the car in (hence “plug-in” hybrid). To get the most out of a PHEV, you must plug it in and fill it with gas. Once the electricity is depleted, the car will operate like a regular hybrid. In theory, you can operate the car by just filling it with gas (or by just charging the vehicle) but then you are missing out on the “best of both worlds” nature of PHEVs. They give you enough electric range for your day-to-day, around-town commutes (where EVs are the most efficient) while still giving you the practicality of having a car that can easily go on a road trip (and not have to worry about America’s lackluster charging network).
